Challenge
Cup Final
Manchester City Ladies 2 v 1 Fletcher Moss
|
|
Report by : Chris
McGrath |
|
The Second meeting of these two teams was again played at
Glossop North End, a change of venue from the proposed venue,
this being Hurst Cross home of Ashton United. City began the
game high from their victory seven days ago, and in determined
mood to produce the display they were capable of, but strangely
was missing last Sunday’s epic encounter.
City began the game kicking from left to right, and were
immediately on the attack, penning Fletcher back into their own
half for the first 15 minutes. Within this period, City, and in
particular Sarah Penny, had two gilt edge chances to take the
lead, the first as early as the fourth minute saw Sarah put
through, and a one on one with the keeper saw the ball go
agonizingly wide of the keepers left post, with the keeper
beaten.
Again within a few minutes of that chance, Sarah was put
through, again one on one with the keeper, again just the wrong
side of the post. You would have thought that Fletcher would
have heeded the warnings, and got wise to the City tactics, but
for a third time Sarah was put through, and gratefully accepted
the chance, this putting City one nil up.
Fletcher were finding it hard to break down a City side, who
this time were fresh from a week long rest, and this showed,
with some great one touch passing opening up Fletcher, but
unfortunately, this was only sporadic, and at the interval City
only had one goal to show for their dominance.
Again the City goal Keeper didn’t half a shot to save in the
first half.
Half time City 1 Fletcher Moss 0
City were expecting an assault on their goal in the second
period, but this did not come, and as the Second period
progressed, City became more and more comfortable, and it seemed
as though this time, the game would be decided within normal
time. Then out of the blue, and extremely harshly, City were
dealt a major blow, when the referee, saw something within the
City area, which no one else within the ground saw, and awarded
a penalty to Fletcher Moss. From the spot kick Fletcher were
level, and this seemed to spur them on for a few minutes, within
this time they attempted to lay siege to the City area, and from
being a comfortable game for City it had become a real fight.
The game now was finely balanced, and it looked as though extra
time was gain beckoning, but the as with the previous game, City
struck, again the ball was played through the middle to Sarah
Penny, who again was one on one with the Keeper, and again made
no mistake with the finish, and put City into the lead, as with
the previous game, this came just within the normal time, and as
with the previous game it seemed as though City had snatched a
victory, this time without doubt fully deserved.
City regrouped and with the game ticking down, they were
determined not to make the mistake, harshly learnt from the
previous game.
There were scenes of jubilation not long after, as this time the
referee blew, signalling the end of the game, and confirming
City as the undisputed cup winners, this becoming the last piece
within the jigsaw for City as they achieved a Treble.

League Cup Final
Manchester City Ladies 3 V 3 Fletcher Moss
City win 4 - 2 on penalties |

Report by : Chris

|
With City only making the Final on Friday night,
this was another hard game within a short period of time. City
began the game kicking from right to left, playing in their
traditional Sky Blue, with Fletcher playing in Yellow.
The Pitch was very hard, and without grass to large areas,
causing City to reappraise their approach to the game, as it was
obvious that a quick passing game would not be possible.
From the start City attempted to enforce their dominance, and
within ten Minutes of the start City were one nil up, a ball
over the top being met by Sarah Penny, who made no mistake with
the shot One nil City.
City then took their foot of the gas and allowed Fletcher to
gain a strangle hold on the Midfield, this meant that City could
not feed their front players, and for the remainder of the half,
it was a Midfield battle with few chances being created at
either half.
The City goal Keeper didn’t half a shot to save in the first
half, and the only real chance was a through ball from City,
Sarah Penny again latching onto, and slotting the ball home,
only for the goal to be ruled off side. The half time whistle
couldn’t come quick enough for both teams.
Half time City 1 Fletcher Moss 0
City knew that Fletcher would come straight out of the traps in
the second period, and this they did, City were now defending
their lead, and with Fletcher taking control of the Midfield, it
was all hands to pump. With 5 minutes of the Second period gone,
Fletcher got a harsh free kick on the City Right. The ball was
brilliantly whipped into the danger area, and with no City
Player taking Control, the ball was headed past the helpless
Keeper by a City defender for the Fletcher equaliser.
The game was now on a knife edge, and City were defending, with
Fletcher on th attack looking for the winner. This was the first
time all season that City had endured such pressure, but they
raised their game, and with extra looming launched an attack
which ended with a corner to City.
The ball was played into the danger area by City, and a
brilliant Volley by Becky Grocott gave City the Lead. This was
timed at just into injury time, and City looked to have sealed a
win. But with time running out for Fletcher they launched a
speculative ball from defence towards the City goal, and an
unfortunate mis kick from City’s otherwise faultless keeper
presented Fletcher with the goal to take the game into extra
time. There was barely time for the restart.
In the first period of extra time things were tight, but a
superb strike from the Fletcher Striker, arguably the goal of
the match gave Fletcher the lead, and for the first time this
season left City trailing. The score approaching the final
period of extra time 3-3 to Fletcher.
With Time now against City, the Management threw caution to the
wind, bringing off the majority of the defence, in an attempt to
get the crucial equaliser, this was to be a master stroke with
City’s captain Gergia France being released through Midfield,
and with only the Keeper to beat coolly slotted the equaliser.
There again was barely enough time to restart the game, no
Penalties.
City began First
S. Penny 1
Fletcher equalised 1-1
Then K. Hbberley for City 2-1
Fletcher then missed their next attempt, superbly save by Helen
Oakes
G. France next for City, but superbly saved City 2-1
Then Helen made another great save City 2-1
Up Stepped J Reid to give City a 3-1 lead.
Fletcher then scored to give City a 3-2 lead,
S. Edmondson stepped up for City, with the task of scoring to
give City Victory, a task she gratefully accepted 4-2 City.

This was the second time of asking for the Semi
Final of the Challenge Cup, with the Victors facing Fletcher
Moss in the Final. The game was played on a sunny evening, in
perfect conditions, and pitch which would be perfect for playing
bowls on it was that good. City were quick out of the starting
blocks, and with their first attack of the match created an
opening for Sarah Penny, who cool as a cucumber slotted home.
It didn’t take long for City to double their advantage, and this
time the scorer was a regular on the score sheet, Becky Grocott,
who scored with ease with the Stockport defence at sixes and
Sevens.
The game was becoming completely one sided, with attack after
attack either ending in a goal or a near miss for City, and at
Half Time, Stockport were thank full to go in only trailing by
Five Goals, coming again from Sarah Penny and Becky Grocott.
Half time City 5 Stockport 0
At halftime, the message to the City Players was more of the
same, and it certainly worked, with City increasing their
advantage soon after the break, this time a great strike from
outside the penalty area by Becky Grocott, this certainly being
the goal of the game.
Stockport, now playing into a blustery wind, seemed to take
heart from this, and within a few minutes of the restart, scored
a, ball played through the left, was received by the Stockport
player and with her pace, she took the ball past the City
defence, and dispatch a shot into the roof of the net
This was to be Stockport's only chance of the half, and City
began to take control, although they only breached the Stockport
defence one further time, if it wasn’t for the Stockport Keeper,
the score could have been in double figures.
City now meet Fletcher Moss in the Final at Glossop North End

3 V 0 Fletcher Moss |

Report by : Chris

Finally the first meeting of the only unbeaten Clubs in the
Division took place, a game which was eagerly anticipated by the
City Management, to see how far City had progressed from last
seasons disappointments.
City began as they had in all their previous matches with some
quick interchanges, and began to impose their qualities on the
game. There was a new formation, with City adopting for a
Diamond formation, giving their shape a little more strength
through the middle.
City were playing some outstanding football, and chances began
to develop, and but for some outstanding saves from the Fletcher
Moss goalkeeper, City would have been at least two goals to the
good before they scored.
The goal itself was due to some outstanding work by in form
Captain Georgia France, who left the Fletcher Right Back in
disarray as she cut down the left flank. With the defender
appealing for a goal kick, Georgia Crossed the ball into the
danger area, where Kali Habberley was first to react, hitting an
unstoppable shot into the net, 1-0 and nothing more than City
deserved.
You would have expected a quick reply from Fletcher, but it was
again City asking all the questions, and within five minutes of
taking the lead, they had doubled their advantage, a strong run
down the right by Francesca Sullivan, and an even better cross
into the area, was struck firmly into the net by Kali Habberley,
for City’s and Kali’s second of the day.
City were now in complete control of the game, and the only
surprise at half time was the scoreline, with the game still
within Fletcher Moss reach, although the domination and attempts
on goal told another story. In a first half completely dominated
by City, Fletcher did not manage one shot on goal.
Half time City 2 Fletcher Moss 0
City knew that Fletcher would come straight out of the traps in
the second period, and this they did, but for all their early
huff and puff of the second half, they did not test the City
Keeper, and it was left to City to make all the running, and
create the opening. This they did, time and again unlocking the
Fletcher defense, and but for the Post, and some great
goalkeeping, City would have had the game sewn up before their
third goal did arrive.

City began the game with only 9 fit first team
players, and things would get progressively worse as the day
drew on. The game started brightly enough for City, again some
free flowing football producing some great goals and giving the
opposition no chance. In a totally one sided first half City
produced some great football, but towards the end of the first
half, City’s problems began, first Emma Pilling pulled up with
an injury to her foot, with no substitutes available City were
now stretched, then Kali Habberley twisted her knee, and Jordan
Reid aggravated an old injury, giving City major half time
problems.
City’s half time break would be spent attending to the trio of
injured players and assessing the second half became a priority,
especially with what was to follow early in the second period.
Half time City 7 Medlock 0
The instructions to the girls as the second half kicked off were
simple, pass the ball, and don’t aggravate the injuries, but
with fewer than ten minutes of the Second half gone, City were
forced to bring off Jordan Reid, no sooner had she come off,
then City had to put Kali Habberley into goal and bring Helen
Oakes out. Something that City have resisted all season even
when the games have been one sided, as this inevitably leads to
complacency and also affects the stability of the team.
City for all their problems still were good enough to score a
further 3 goals in the second half, and this with only six fit
players.
The goals were spread again but Becky Grocott again claimed the
lions share of them, scoring another five to add to her
impressive total, Jordan Reid 1, Chloe Edwards 1, Kali Habberley
2 and Georgia France 1 were the other scorers in a match that
proved to be a trying as any this season, but for the wrong
reasons.

Manchester City Ladies
22 v 0 Urmston Mead |
|
Report by : Chris
McGrath |
|
City began this game with one change from the
previous five games, Shauna Edmondson was replaced by Lauren
Pershouse, making her first start of the season for the Blues.
City started with 3 at the back, three in midfield, and two
strikers, this was the return fixture from the opening game of
the season which saw City record a 26 goal haul. With Urmston
finding some good form, City expected a sterner test than the
opening day fixture.
Urmston began the game kicking from right to left, with City
attacking down hill With two minutes on the clock City hadn’t
created much, and it was Urmston who were maybe just edging this
encounter, but then with quick interplay in the middle of the
park, City broke with devastating speed, to record their first
goal of the afternoon, and from this point on Urmston would not
cause City any further problems.
City now got into their stride, but Urmston kept plugging away,
and with a well organized defence caught the City attack time
and time off side, meaning City would need to be patient in
their build-ups, and patient they were.
By half time City had scored a further 9 goals, leaving the game
over as a contest by half time.
City began the second half with even more purpose, and it was no
surprise when City increased their lead, all the play being in
the Urmston half, and City’s one touch football ripping through
the now fragile Urmston defence.
By the end of the game City had scored a further 12 goals giving
the result a true reflection of the City dominance.
Amazingly, Becky Grocott scored another six goals, this being
yet another double hatrick, with further goals coming from
Georgia France 3, Jordan Reid 3, Chloe Edwards 2, Kali Habberley
2 and Siobhan Kelly 3.

As with all City’s games this season they started
to press forward from the first whistle. The ground was very
wet, and the goal area was of concern to the City Management,
but those fears were swept aside with some breathtaking football
from City. Middleton could not cope with the City passing, and
time and time again City broke with ease, using the wings well.
City’s first goal coming after three minutes, and from then on
it was one way traffic.
By half time the game was over as a contest with City leading by
eight goals, and Middleton not able to produce one shot, leaving
Helen Oakes a spectator.
Half time City 8 Middleton 0
The second half saw city again press from the start and it was
no surprise when City increased their lead, again the wingers
being fed by the City Back three, and breaking with breathtaking
speed. The second half brought a further five goals to leave a
final score of thirteen to nil.
Seven Goals from in form Becky Grocott, were complemented by
oner from Kali Habberley, Three from Chloe Edwards, one from
Georgia France, and one from Jordan Reid.
All credit to the girls, who again showed great strength, and
also great togetherness, this result keeping City at the top of
the league, with an impressive record.

Citys first game for 2 weeks again saw them
travelling to the south of Manchester, this time playing Poynton.
With no games for 2 weeks, City needed to be fully focused, and
switched on for this tricky tie. City again reverting to their
Black and Red Kit.
The game started with City kicking up hill, with City attacking
from the first whistle, and within a minute they were one up,
from this moment on the game took a predictable route, with City
in total domination, and Poynton desperately defending. It was
no surprise when City doubled their lead, and before half time
City were in total control, knocking in a further six goals, to
give the half time score a true reflection of the first half
City leading by eight.
Half time City 8 Poynton 0
The Second half saw city kicking downhill, and as in the first
half City were dominant attacking at will, with the City Keeper
a spectator. Some great saves by the Poynton Keeper kept out a
number of city efforts, but City still managed a further eight
in the Second Half, giving the final score a true reflection of
the days events.
Four Goals from in form Becky Grocott, were complemented by Four
from Kali Habberley, Three from Chloe Edwards, Three from
Georgia France, Two from Emma Pilling, and Two from Jordan Reid.
All credit to the girls, who again showed great strength, and

MAN CITY LADIES 6 v
1 STOCKPORT COUNTY |
|
Report by : Chris
McGrath |
|
This was City’s third game of the season, and on
paper their hardest yet. Last City saw City only manage a 1-1
draw early on in the campaign, so Stockport felt confident of
continuing their hoodoo over City. City again reverting to their
Black and Red Kit.
The game started with City kicking down hill, but as always, it
was City doing the pressing, forcing Stockport to defend deep,
and creating the space for the Midfield to exploit. Some of the
touches from City were class, with Stockport having no answer to
the one touch passing, and it came as no surprise when City took
the lead after 10 minutes, a brilliant long range effort from E.
Pilling beating the Stockport Keeper at the near post.
City grew in confidence and doubled their lead with a few
minutes to go in the first half, again a strike from E. Pilling
leaving the over worked Stockport Keeper grasping at air.
This seemed to spur Stockport to life and for the final few
minutes of the first half they pressed forward, and just on the
stroke of half time City conceded their first goal of the
campaign.
Half time City 2 Stockport 1
City began the second half pressing forward, and again asking
all the questions, time and time again the one touch football
getting City in on goal, and with around five minutes of the
Second half gone, City again regained their two goal advantage,
a great ball left the Stockport defence square, and C. Edwards
was left on a one on one with the Stockport goalkeeper, slotting
in from close range.
Further attacks followed and it was no surprise when City hit
their fourth, again a quick one touch passing movement putting
C. Edwards through for her second, and City’s fourth.
Stockport were now growing tired, and were chasing shadows, as
City again and again attacked forcing some great saves from the
Stockport Keeper, but City broke through the defence again with
some clinical passing for C. Edwards to complete her hatrick.
Within a minute City had their sixth, this time a great strike
from the Captain G. France.
Stockport’s heads were down, and the final whistle could not
come early enough for them.
Although normally we do not single anyone out for superb
performances, this week an exception was made, with Shauna
Edmondson being congratulated for a strong and inspired
performance at Centre back, rightly earning the Player of the
Match Award.
City now sit proudly at the top of the leader board, with three
wins out of three, and this weekend have a day off.

MEDLOCK RANGERS 0 v
9 MAN CITY |
|
Report by : Chris
McGrath |
|
City’s first away match was
against Medlock Rangers, the venue being changed
to City’s new home, Littlemoss High School due
to Medlocks pitch being unavailable. Their First
away game brought another first with City
reverting to their Black and Red Kit for the
first time also.
The game started as always against Medlock a
close affair, but it wasn’t long before City
began to get into their stride and start to
dominate the opposition.
City threw attack after attack at Medlock, but
to no avail, as some dogged defending by Medlock,
and some outstanding bravery by the Medlock
goalkeeper kept City at bay and Medlock on level
terms.
City eventually got their breakthrough courtesy
of B. Grocott, who pounced on a loose ball to
hit an un-stoppable shot to give City the lead.
With time running out in the first half, it
looked as though the sides would go in with only
the one goal between them, but in two glorious
minutes City hit two goals to enter half time
three goals to the good, no more than City
deserved, and but for the heroics of the Medlock
Keeper could have been a lot more.
Half time City 3 Medlock 0.
City began the second half on a high, and it
wasn’t long before they scored the fourth, again
brilliant one touch football leading to the
breakthrough.
City was now on a high, and again began to
dominate the game, with very little in the way
of attacking coming from Medlock.
Becky Grocott again helped herself to a double
hatrick, with some superb finishing, leaving the
final scoreline a convincing 9-0 win.
Becky has now scored 12 goals in two games, some
return, and was worthy of the Player of the

MAN CITY 26 v 0 URMSTON
MEADOWSIDE |
|
Report by : Chris
McGrath |
|
This was City’s first game with their new formation, 3-3-2,
playing 9 aside, and also at their new home, Littlemoss High
School. The game threw together City and Urmston, who had
given City more than enough to think about in their earlier
encounters.
With the game being played on a full size pitch, and the offside
rule now coming into play, it would be a learning curve for the
City Management.
City began the first half kicking downhill, and straight from
the kick off the pattern was set. A great run down the right
from K. Habberley resulted in a long cross, which eluded the
Urmston Keeper and ended up in the back of the net, a great
start with barely 20 seconds on the clock.
City relished the open space of a full size pitch, and Urmston
were finding it hard to get the ball, let alone make any
meaningful in roads into the City defensive line, so it came as
no surprise when City scored again.
Throughout the first 30 mins. City produced some breath taking
football, and were scoring at will the half time whistle came as
relief to Urmston who had been completely dominated throughout
the first period, and had not managed a single shot on target.
Half time City 10 Urmston 0.
The second half began as the first finished, City attacking,
Urmston bravely defending, but the passing and movement meant
that as the game progressed, it was inevitable that Urmston
would tire, and at that point City ran riot.
Attack after attack brought goals, with the final score ending
up City 26 Urmston 0.

TAMESIDE CHALLENGE CUP
TOURNAMENT |
|
Report by : Chris
McGrath |
|
Manchester City took a strong Under 13 Team to their last
tournament of the year at Old Aldwinians Rugby Ground in
Audenshaw, to take part in the Tameside Challenge Cup.
The City team were up against three other teams in a league
basis, with the top two teams going into the final. The Ties
being played as seven minutes each way.
The three other teams were Buxton A, Buxton B and City’s old
foes, Stockport County.
City began against Buxton B, and in a closely fought first half
City went in with a slender 1 goal advantage. In the second half
it was all city, and a further three goals went in, with no
reply, the perfect start.
Next up were Stockport, who had yet to play a match, City had
only a few minutes to gain their breath before commencing the
tie. City began to push from the start, and all the play was
compressed into the Stockport half, with the City defence barely
being called into action. Midway through the first half City
produced a move which brought about what would be the winning
goal, a swift interchange of passing gave Kali Abberley the room
she needed to hit an unstoppable shot into the bottom left hand
corner. Half Time City 1-0 Stockport. It was more of the same in
the second half, Stockport having no response to City’s
dominance, Chloe Edwards was on fire, and running through the
Stockport defence at will, the only thing lacking was the
finish, but at least she was in the positions to miss the
chances, probably the best game she has played for City, and
worthy of the Captains armband in the absence of Georgia France.
The only surprise at the end was the scoreline, City 1-0
Stockport
The final league fixture was against Buxton A, again in a
closely fought first half City produced a great battling
display, and maintained their scoring streak, scoring two to no
reply. Half Time City 2-0 Buxton A. In the second half City took
their foot off the pedal a little, sub consciously thinking
about the final, this proved to be a mistake, with a rare break
from Buxton producing what would be the only goal to be scored
against City all day. The Final Score City 2-1 Buxton A
City now had to wait to see who they would meet in the final,
and in a closely fought match between Buxton A and Stockport, it
was Stockport who won by the odd goal, leaving the Final between
City and Stockport.
The game started as the first had finished, with City pushing
forward and Stockport barely able to get out of their own half,
City dominating, but for all their domination, they could not
find the first goal, with the half time score reading City 0-0
Stockpot, the first time City had not opened their account in
the first half.
The Second half brought more of the same, Stockport soaking up
the City pressure, City unable to take their chances, the
inevitable happening, the game going to extra time, and “golden
goal”
How the golden goal would work is that the first three minutes
would be played with all six players from each team battling it
out, and then after three minutes both sides would remove a
player, and after each further three minute period a player
would be removed from each side until a goal was scored.
City again started the extra period the more aggressive, again
Stockport defending, and it came as no surprise when the first
girls were called off, this happened a further two times until
both City and Stockport were left with two outfield players and
their goalkeepers. The ball was played long by the Stockport
Keeper, but Kali Abberley was strong in the tackle and turned
defence into attack, now City were two on one, Kali judged the
pass to Emma Pilling to perfection, and with only the goalkeeper
to beat, she hit the ball to the left of the goal, giving city
the vital golden goal.
City now await the start of the new season with renewed
confidence, but we would also like to mention the two girls who
made the jump from U12 to play in the U13 Tournament, these
being Amy Potts and Beth Connolly, who both had great games
throughout the day.
